Black Isle Studios returns!

GameBanshee is reporting that Interplay is resurrecting Black Isle Studios, the RPG developer that became famous with Fallout 1 & 2, the Icewind Dale series and Planetscape: Torment.

The developer’s website has been relaunched (currently unreachable) and the domain is registered by Interplay and Herve Caen (Interplay CEO) who recently lost a lawsuit against Bethesda regarding Fallout Online.

Little is known for the moment other than the website stating “Our goal has always been to create the best RPGs. Black Isle Studios is back.” The newly launched Facebook page reads Black Isle is “formed to develop and publish high quality role-playing games”.

Original Black Isle co-founder Feargus Urquhart currently works at Obsidian Entertainment, just like former lead designer Chris Avellone who told Eurogamer the following:

“No idea what it’s about. I wasn’t aware anything beyond the name was left at Interplay.”

So… something to be excited about? With most of the old Black Isle staff having moved on (many to Obsidian) you can wonder what Interplay is planning. A resurrection in name only? Or are they planning a real offensive?
