Blizzard: single-player is getting extinct

Speaking with Gamesindustry.biz, Blizzard’s lead designer for World of Warcraft, Rob Pardo, stated that due to things like piracy and the ability to rent games, publishers are getting out of the business of creating single-player games.

It’s really sad, there’s just a lot of elements out there that conspire to make those games difficult to make now. Between pirating or the ability for people to rent games, it’s hard for publishers to pour millions and millions of dollars into a game and not necessarily see the return they need to make those budgets realistic.

For decades, single-player games were being made and publishers were profitable despite piracy being present, just like the ability to rent games. So in fact the only thing that has changed is that publishers are putting bigger budgets into games. But for what? For better textures? Hell, we all enjoyed games that were made in a garage!

One can wonder where the priorities are.
