Carlito’s Way

Carlito Brigante used to be one of the big shots in the drug scene but his life of crime resulted in him getting sent to jail for a long time. After five years, his lawyer David Kleinfeld manages to get him released on a technicality but where everyone expects him to return to the street and pick up his old business, Carlito vows he’s a changed man. He wants to earn some honest money and retire to the Bahamas whith the love of his life, Gail.

In order to raise the money to move out of New York, he buys into a night club but former associates keep trying to pull him back into his old life and when Keinfeld asks him for a “favor” things turn for the worse…

Sound and Vision:
Except for the opening scene where there’s some dirt and specks, we really can’t complain about the image quality. Vivid colors, deep blacks, good contrast and shadow detail, … Some scenes are a bit on the soft side now and then but overall this Blu-ray really shines.

The DTS-HD soundtrack does an excellent job on the technical side with good use of all channels for the creation of atmosphere. The movie doesn’t have an action-packed sound scheme but rather creates atmosphere with a subtle music score and good use of effects. Add to that crystal clear and well-positioned dialogues and you’ve got a winner! (even if it isn’t demo material)

Extras:
– Brian De Palma on Carlito’s Way
– Deleted Scenes
– The Making of Carlito’s Way

The Making Of is pretty good but we had hoped for some more…

Conclusion:
There are a number of classic gangster movies and Carlito’s Way is without a doubt one of them. The great acting by Al Pacino and Sean Penn, De Palma’s filming and storytelling, the subtle but perfectly matching sound score… all together it makes for a great movie that is a must-have.

The Blu-ray delivers this 1993 movie the image and sound quality it deserves and only in the extras department we could have wished for some more substance. Definitely one we would suggest!

Our Score:
9.0
