Company of Heroes 2 goes realistic
THQ has sent out word that Relic Entertainment’s Company of Heroes 2 will have such a realistic weather system, the game will be able to recreate the weather conditions as they were in the brutal Soviet winter on the Eastern Front during World War 2.
Relic’s new Essence Engine 3.0 and its ColdTech system will be responsible for the “extreme cold” mechanic which “accurately encapsulates the Soviet winter which reached extremes of -40 degrees in 1941.” As a result, you’ll need to keep infantry units warm by means of fires and getting them garrisoned in buildings while playing on winter maps as otherwise they’ll gradually freeze to death.
Another side effect of the extremely cold temperatures will be that snow will appear on buildings and vehicles until it gets melted or removed by players. Of course snow will also tamper with troops movement and tracks will remain visible until fresh snow drops out of the sky to cover them.
Finally, I wouldn’t be all too fond of hanging around lakes too much as ice can crack and make your units fall into the watter. Very nice if you’ve got a huge army to only see it drown when crossing water.
THQ released a trailer that shows off the mechanics and you can check it out below, courtesy of VG247:
