Doom 4 completely rebooted
After five years of development, id Software is far from getting Doom 4 in stores.
Following a story by Kotaku, id Software parent Bethesda has confirmed to Eurogamer that back in 2011, the studio started on a completely new version of Doom 4. Also, various sources have stated that even with the game being completely revamped, development seems to be quite a mess:
“Larger creature ambitions turned into mediocre garden variety behaviors,” the source said. “[The story] again became lame and unfit for a late night sci-fi channel, and the team didn’t feel a whole lot of ownership and contribution to the project. Cue the exodus of talent leaving ever since.”
“Most of [Id’s] top talent has left or been fired,” said another unrelated source.
Two sources have also told Kotaku that Zenimax has even threatened id Software that they have to finish Doom 4 in the next year “or else”. One suggestion might be that id Software would be refocused on pure tech development like the Id Tech 5 Engine which is being used for several of Bethesda’s titles.
With Doom 4 up in the air and Rage 2 cancelled (indeed!) to allow the studio to truly focus on one game, it seems id Software is far from the powerhouse development studio it once was…
