Movie:
Clive Barker is one of the most well-known horror authors next to Stephen King. That his book Hellraiser got filmed was therefor no surprise.

Frank is a guy who only lives for pleasure. He doesn't care about anything or anyone, just as long as he's having fun. When he finds a box which is some kind of puzzle that should give the ultimate pleasure he immediately tries to solve it. What he doesn't know, however, is that the ultimate pleasure is also the ultimate pain.
Frank disappears never to be seen again.

Years later, Frank's brother moves with his wife and daughter to the old family house. When his wife accidentally scratches herself and drops some blood on the attic floor, Frank suddenly reappears. Apparantly he was in some kind of other dimension and the dropped blood gave him the possibility to escape back to the real world.
Unfortunately, his body is stripped from skin and he needs more blood to be able to return to his former self.

Hellraiser is a cult movie which is loved by loads of people and the evil Pinhead character instantly got lined up with other legendary foes as Jason (Friday 13th), Freddy Krueger (Nightmare on Elm Street) and Michael Myers (Halloween). It's of no surprise that several sequels have been filmed, but none of those had the same impact as the original one although Pinhead becomes more and more a leading character in the successors.
 
Sound and Vision:
Hellraiser is an old movie and the image quality has not been enhanced with the conversion to DVD. This results in the fact that the image isn't always sharp and sometimes even carries noise.
Not really bad not extraordinary good either.

The original movie was filmed in Stereo so the DD5.1 track is completely new. Surround channels are well-used, but the dialogues give an unnatural feeling much like if it aren't the original characters that are talking.
 
Extras:
Not much except a couple of brief promo-interviews with Clive Barker and some of the cast.
 
Conclusion:
Hellraiser is a horror movie as a horror movie should be. Great foes, tention built up quite good and an unexpected end turn. Any fan of scary movies should have this one in his/her collection.
