Movie:
It's been 20 years since Don Diego de la Vega took on the mask of the hero Zorro to fight Don Rafael Montero, got his wife killed and got imprisoned. When he hears that Montero is returning to California, he escapes from prison and takes on the desperado Alejandro Murrieta who he trains to become his successor to take over the role of Zorro and fight Montero. However, when he finds out that Montero has raised his daughter Elena as his own and Murrietta falls in love with her, things get complicated.
Sound and Vision:
Except for some minor color bleeding (which was also present on the DVD) we get an excellent transfer. Colors are as they should be and the amount of detail is simply superb. This is an older movie but Sony has clearly gone to great lengths to clean it up and deliver and excellent image quality.
The same can be said from the DTS-HD track. From the very first moment on we get immersed in a soundmix that uses all channels perfectly and delivers a warm and ambiance-filled sound.
Extras:
- Audio commentary by Martin Campbell
- Unmasking Zorro
- Exclusive scene of The Legend of Zorro
- The legend of Zorro Behind-The-Scenes
- Deleted scènes
The same extras that were already on the previously released DVD
Conclusion:
The Mask of Zorro is a simplistic and predictable adventure movie that manages to entertain thanks to the excellent cast and decent directing. The storyline isn't anything special but the action is well displayed and the interaction between Banderas, Hopkins and Zeta-Jones is a joy to see.
If you're looking for some straightforward entertainment with excellent image and sound then you certainly can consider adding this release to your collection.
