Evil Dead, The
Ash and his friends go to a cabin in the woods to have a nice holiday but once there, they find a tape recorder. Of course they can’t keep it off and when the recorded message starts playing, it raises the dead. Apparently, some ancient spells from the Book of the Dead (aka Necronomicon), were put on the tape and now all hell is breaking loose.
Sound and Vision:
The Evil Dead has had many incarnations on DVD already but none of those have looked as good as this Blu-ray transfer. Don’t expect reference quality as the source material just isn’t good enough, but taken directly from the original 16mm this 1080p transfer is definitely great stuff. Blacks are really deep, contrast is balanced, the grain isn’t too disturbing, and the color saturation is also excellent.
If you think the image quality is great, then just wait until you hear the sound. The new HD track makes this version the very best you’ve ever heard! We get clear and precise voices while the high and midrange are sharp and detailed. The lows unfortunately don’t get enough action, but that’s understandable considering the source material.
Extras:
– The untold saga of The Evil Dead
– Audio commentary by Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell & Rob Tapert
– The Evil Dead: Treasures from the Cutting Room Floor
– The Undying Legacy of The Evil Dead
– Make-Up Test
- At the Drive-In
– Discovering Evil Dead
Conclusion:
Sam Raimi’s classic has received its best transfer yet. The Evil Dead never looked nor sounded this good!
Evil Dead is the real start of Sam Raimi’s career and is still a cult classic. It caused a hype when it was released and can still hold ground in this present day and age, although Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness are a bit better in my opinion
The extras are also worth checking out but we do want to mention that some have already appeared on earlier DVD releases, and not everything that’s present on the region1 release is included here which is a shame.
