Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The

Convicted journalist Mikael Blomkvist gets requested by industrialist Henrik Vanger to delve into Vanger’s family history and find out what happened 40 years ago to Harriet Vanger, Henrik’s niece who disappeared from the island where the Hanger family lives. Next to a decent pay, Vanger promises Blomkvist to provide him some valuable information regarding his conviction if he accepts the job so Blomkvist moves to the island, supposedly for writing a biography on the Vanger family.

When hacker Lisbeth Salander is tasked to help Blomkvist with his investigations, the two quickly find out there’s a lot more going on with the family than expected at first. As the two get closer to find the truth, their lives are getting more and more in danger…

Sound and Vision:
The image quality is of very high level with deep blacks, lots of detail and good contrast. If we were to nitpick, we could say that at certain instances, the whites are a bit too strong and a couple of night time scenes have a bit weaker brightness resulting in blacks being a bit off. But that’s truly nitpicking as overall the image is near perfect.

The DTS-HD 5.1 track provided by Sony does an excellent job on the dialogues while the few action scenes that are present also get supported well. Not demo-material due to movie running mostly on character interaction but really good nonetheless.

Conclusion:
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is based on the best-selling book Men Who Hate Women by Stieg Larsson and is a very dark thriller as we don’t see that often these days anymore.

Daniel Craig and Stellan Skarsgard do a great job as investigative reporter Mikael Blomkvist and Martin Vanger, but it’s for sure Rooney Mara who gets the crown. Her performance as Lisbeth Salander is exemplary with just the right balance between acting the tough hacker on one side and being a fragile girl in need of some love on the other.

The great acting combined with good storyline, excellent image and sound quality, and an overload of extras make The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo a must-have. This is without a doubt one of the best Blu-ray releases of the year.
