Hobo with a Shotgun

A homeless man arrives in a new town by train, to find it’s ran by criminals who look at nothing and no-one. After having helped out an abused prostitute, he decides to take matters into his own hands and clear the town of all criminal behaviour the only way he knows how: with a 20 gauge shotgun.

Sound and Vision:
Hobo with a Shotgun imitates 70s exploitation movies and the image nicely reflects this. The colors are overly saturated and the palette leans highly towards vivid reds, oranges and yellows, while contrast is high although blacks are nice and inky. The only minor downpoint is that in some darker scenes, we found some noise present.

The sound follows nicely with an aggressive and ambient track that has a good balance and uses the fronts and rears nicely while also delivering enough power to the low end frequencies.

None, something we really pitty as the region 1 version is loaded.

Conclusion:
Hobo with a Shotgun was originally a faux trailer entry in a ‘Grindhouse’ promo contest and runs in the line of movies that try to recreate the 70s epxloitation genre like Machete and Death Proof.

While Machete and Death Proof have some huge names behind them, Hobo is rather low budget and does things better. In a way. While the others try to recreate the long lost genres, Hobo IS part of the genre, it IS a low budget exploitation and vigilante movie and as such, it perfectly nails every aspect of this genre.

The acting is over the top, the story doesn’t make much sense, the plot twists are stupid and everything feels downright cheap. If you don’t like that, you’ll probably join me in saying that this film is plain awful. However, if you’re really into this genre, Hobo will satisfy you as few movies recently have.
