League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, The

Allan Quartermain (Sean Connery), Captain Nemo (Naseeruddin Shah), Rodney Skinner (Tony Curran), Wilhelmina Harker (Peta Wilson), Dorian Grey (Stuart Townsend) and Dr. Jekyll / Mr. Hyde (Jason Flemyng) are brought together by M, a man in the service of the British Intelligence. Apparantly, a villain who calls himself The Phantom is trying to get a war going on between all the major countries so that he can sell his weapons to them and His Majesty wants the League of ExtraOrdinary Men to stop him. They find out that The Phantom is planning to blow up Venice during a convention where the heads of State will be present so they hurry to stop this evil plan. But what they don’t know is that a traitor is amongst them…

Sound and Vision:
Except for some minor edge enhancement (which you only spot when really looking for it) the image quality is perfect. There’s absolutely nothing that’s bad and we really want to congratulate Fox with this result as it probably hasn’t been easy for this movie which is packed with action.

The reviewcopy we received was the French version so we couldn’t check out the English DTS track but don’t worry as the 5.1 Dolby Digital track is splendid as well. Lots of dynamic and aggressive use of the surround speakers, clear dialogues from the center speaker and good support for music and effects from the front speakers. Terrific !

Extras:
2 audio commentary tracks are included in the 1-DVD set which we got to check out. If you want more, you’ll need to get the 2-disc version which contains the following (but we couldn’t check it out) :
– Matters of Pre-Visualisation
– Photo Gallery
– Assembling the League
– Deleted and Extended Scenes
– Behind the Fantasy
– European Premieres
– Trailers & TV-spots

Conclusion:
What can I say ? This DVD shines in all aspects and is just a must-have for anyone looking for technically great DVD’s!

Our Score:
7.0
