Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude
he intro movie shows you in half a minute what you’ll be occupying yourself with for the rest of the game: pipi, kaka, stupid jokes and fat boobs! Als a true man I’m of course a real fan of the latter two while the first two by nature lead to the third. On the fourth I can be short: the more the better and that’s what Larry Lovage, the nephew of the legendary loverboy Larry Laffer, also thinks. Since you’re faithful visitors of this site you know that this episode of the Larry series isn’t a true adventure, to my disappointment. Together with the main character also the gameplay has become the little nephew of the legendary games where you encountered hilarious adventures with Larry in a sexy and naughty world.
But let’s not get ahead of the facts and start at the beginning: the story. As Larry Lovage you’re a fresh university student who wants to proove himself for his macho buddies. And how can you do this better that by taking part of a more disclosing version of “Blind Date” ? Before you can subscribe however, youneed to show the quiz master that you’re a real ladykiller. This can be done by collecting items which proove that you’ve done a chick. Once you’ve got enough of such items in your possession, you get a step closer to enternal fame.
The storyline doesn’t have more than this and we can continue with that in mind to the gameplay.
To conquer an innocent university student you’ll have to complete some mini-games, here and there do an assignment or find something. Also keeping under control of your budget and alcohol level (you can take out your little friend with the right shift and help your blather anywhere you want) is part of your tasks.
The little games however are most prominently present and consist out of variations of amongst others a larry-fied version of Pong (with penis of course), a click-on-the-correct-arrow-in-the-correct-order games (with nice boobs in the background to distract you), a run-away-from-the-bad-man game, the point-the-sperm-cell-to-the-right-direction dialogue game and of course a drinking contest. This latter is fun for a while, the others have gameplay that’s too stupid for words. “Really bad” I already hear you think, but there’s light at the end of the tunnel.
The dialogues, especially during the dialogue game, are well-done, sometimes rather stupid but often also funny. Also the stories you get to see during the cutscenes are quite original and not without humour. It’s best to know the language of Shakespeare to understand the wordgames though.
The major positive point for teenagers (and anyone with a healthy interest in some female nudity) is of course that successfully completing a game sometimes shows you some bare skin, an occasional bed scene or some burnt jokes. I also want to add that there are some extra’s that, in short, offer you more nudity.
Though the content is clearly adult (don’t mistaken yourself, there is frontal nudity and sex) the concept in my opinion is wrong. Or you make a true adult game with lots of erotism and nudity, and in exchange for completing the games you give that in full force as a reward, or you make a sexy but all in all rather innocent game, with entertaining storyline, nice movies and good gameplay. Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude however is a bad combination where the gameplay is below par and the virtual “reward” often disappoints by letting you sit on your male hunger.
The first couple of hours you’ll still be heavily motivated (and maybe somewhat addicted) to get through the mini-games in the hopes of some goodlooking pictures or sexy movies, but when the reward over 50% of the time isn’t what you had hoped, the excitement disappears as ice for the sun.
On top of the the subjects are sometimes a bit over the top: you’ll for instance start soft SM-sex with what looks like a 12-year old girl with braces. Also several prejudices are constantly confirmed. I’m completely against political correctness but the female gamers amongst us are REALLY getting hit against their feminist breasts and are constantly portrayed as objects of lust.
The overall game looks decently finished and I didn’t meet any bugs. Both the sound (with honorable mentioning to the voices) and graphics are good although the cutscenes could have been a bit sharper and Larry sometimes really sounds irritating. But as my grandma used to say: even a wonderbra can’t make an A-cup turn into a Double D
I conclude by stating that this game will be able to motivate the hormone-heavy gamers amongst us for a couple of hours. The reasons for this will at the beginning be the (often not fullfilled) promises to female nudity, but after a while only the mostly funny and burnt stories combined with the will to finish the game remain as sole drives. Only the real die-hard tittylovers will really enjoy this game, the rest can let this game perish in the store shelves. One final tip: nude breasts can be found all over the internet and you don’t even have to play one mini-game to get it: Google is more than enough! I myself am patiently waiting for an old-school Larry adventure and in the meantime I’ll practise my charmes on living test subjects.
