Life – Season 1

Charlie Crews is a cop who got sent to jail for a murder he didn’t commit. After 12 years he finally gets out with a settlement that increased his bank account with 50 million dollars and allowed him to go back to work. With his new partner Dani Reese he does around solving murders in a rather peculiar way, while at the same time he secretly investigates the murder he got convicted for to find out who framed him…

Sound and Vision:
We get a decent transfer with plenty of detail, sharp images and bright shiny colors. Compression errors are down to a minimum and also the contrast is quite ok. Towards the end we get scenes that look quite different from the rest of the show and have a real “cinema” look and feel, something that at certain times looks a bit fake but does give the series an “epic” feel.

The 5.1 soundtrack uses the surround speakers mostly for music and environment sounds in a subtle way.

Extras:
– Audio Commentary track
– Bloopers
– Life Begins
– Fruits of Life
– Still Life
– Life’s Questions Answered
– Bonus Disc with pilots from House MD, 30 Rock, Heroes and The Office (US)

Conclusion:
Although there are plenty of stereotypes present in this series, Life does things just a bit different and can almost be seen as the “House MD” of police series. Charlie Crew is an a-typical cop who’s come out of jail after 12 years, a conviction that has changed his life and also his character. While most of his colleagues find him a bit strange, he’s good at his job and determined to find out who framed him.

This first season introduces the main characters and their drives in life but also has a red wire that starts from the very first episodes and remains hanging for the next season. The different characters along with the arc make it a very interesting show to watch with plenty of tension as well as comedy.

Life is definitely a series to check out!
