LucasArts is no more
It sounds as if George Lucas selling his stuff to Disney isn’t all about fun and games.
Kotaku is reporting that Disney has decided to shut down LucasArts and laid off all staff at the company. Disney apparently claims that they can just as easily license their property to other developers or publishers instead of making things themselves. As a result, both Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault the studio’s current projects, have been put in limbo.
LucasFilm, the parent company of LucasArts, made the following statement:
“After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games,”
“As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.”
Kotaku’s source is very clear that Star Wars 1313 or First Assault will never see the light of day:
“With the teams now basically being dispersed I think both games are effectively dead forever,”
