Man Men – Season 4
Don Draper and his associates have set up a new company and are looking to find new customers next to Lucky Strike who’s currently paying the bills. This isn’t an easy job with over 50% of all income coming from the tobacco company, but they’re working hard to become less dependant on one account. Don’s personal life isn’t easy with being divorced from Betty but being the charmer he is, he doesn’t have much trouble finding other women to hang around with.
Don and Betty’s daughter Sally is having a difficult time with her parents being divorced and her behaviour becomes so eradic that Betty sends her to a child psychiatrist. However, it seems that Betty has more use for the psychiatrist than Sally. This and much more in the excellent fourth season of Mad Men.
Sound and Vision:
We watched the previous seasons of Mad Men on DVD and found it to be one of the best-looking TV shows around. Now on Blu-ray this gets even better. The amount of detail shown on the screen is truly amazing and makes you even wonder at times whether this isn’t actually a bad thing as things like background walls no longer look smooth but tend to become a bit ugly at times even. Don’t get turned off by that, however, it just shows how great this transfer is.
The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 focuses on dialogue but has a huge amount of detail that adds to the atmosphere that you already get overwhelmed with from the series itself. Not something to demo your sound system with, but definitely a great track.
Extras:
– Marketing the Mustang: An American Classic
– 1964 Presidential Campaign
– How to Succeed in Business Draper Style
– Divorce: Circa 1960s
Conclusion:
Mad Men is a slow television show that follows the events surrounding an ad agency in the 1960s. No explosions, no action that blows you off your socks, but rather dialogues, emotions and plenty of interaction between characters on all levels. And boy, what a series it is!
After three seasons, we were wondering what the makers could come up with next to keep us interested, but the storylines in season 4 are still of extremely high quality and unveil just enough each episode to keep you longing for more. The atmosphere, the acting, the stories, … it all comes together to make one of the best series currently available, and that without any easy wins to please the general population.
Man Men remains some of the best on TV and this Blu-ray is a must have. Point
