NBA Street v3

EA Big is known for making sports games with a twist. Mostly the point here is more about doing tricks than the actual sport. How crazy the games may look, they each time are great an it’s up to me to see whether NBA Street 3 can lives up to the expectations.

You don’t need to be a mastermind to get the idea of this game. With the best basketball players from the NBA league you go on the street to see who’se the best. A small selection from many famous teams:

•NBA Legends
•NBA Stars
•Atlanta Hawks
•Boston Celtics
•Chicago Bulls
•Denver Nuggets
•Houston Rockets
•Indiana Pacers
•LA Clippers
•LA Lakers

Of course it’s possible to create your own hero and dress him with the many accessories from the shop. You can also upgrade his skills and use him in your team for the Street Challenge, the most important mode of the game.

Here, the idea is (very original) to become the best of all street basketball players. After having made your own character, you can choose 2 other members for your team. The best is to have a good combination of skills, with the standard ones like Dunk, Power en Speed and “Handling” which you need for cool moves. At some times this game looks more like breakdancing than basketball. Oh, and don’t forget to have some giant that can easily block opponents.

In the Street Challenge there are many teams ready to take you on in games with different rules. There’s matches where you can only score by dunking, others where you need to get as many trick points as possible, others with the classic rulebase, and so on. At the end of a game you can usually buy a member of the other team with the money you earn.

The previously mentioned trick points are very important in a game and can make the difference between winning and loosing. You earn them by doing tricks but also combo’s help in acquiring points. In a game where the idea is to earn a certain amount of these, they are of course very important, but of even bigger importance is the gamebreaker level. This is filled with the trick points and once completely full you can do a special move where your players will move in slow-motion and do incredible moves. With a successful gamebreaker it’s possible that you don’t get 1 but up to 3 points while your opponent looses one.

Next to the Street Challenge there’s of course a quick game mode which is called Game On, a multiplayer mode for up to 4 players, and the Dunk Contests where you need to score as much as possible in a crazy dunk.

With a lot of beautiful animations, sharp textures, great models and realistic-looking locations you can say that the graphics are top notch. It’s a real pleasure to watch the cool dunks. From time to time there’s a clipping problem but we don’t really mind.

The sound on the other hand is a bit less. There may well be a great soundtrack present from lesser known artists but the commentary quickly bores. In the beginning it’s funny to listen to it but after he says 6 times the same sentence in one minute you really want to kill him.

NBA Street v3 isn’t only a top game for the sports fanatic as even I, someone who finds basketball one of the dumbest sports ever, have really enjoyed this game. It’s the perfect title to have a quick game, do some cool moves and several hours later notice that you’re still playing. The many unlockable clothing in the shop deliver a longer lifespan for the collector and the Gamecube version has a nice extra in the form of Mario, Luigi en Princess Peach
