17,7 million Xbox 360s

Microsoft has a pretty good day today. After announcing that everyone gets a free game on XBLA, they now state they have sold about 17,7 million Xbox 360's worldwide.

Microsoft has announced that over 17.7 million Xbox 360 units have been sold worldwide since launch.

And updated sales figures for last year's Halo 3 reveal the game has shifted more than 8.1 million copies since launch on September 25.
Halo 3 keeps doing great too, with a total of 8,1 million games sold. A little calculation learns us that's almost 1 game per 2 consoles.

Although there were some negative reviews, Mass Effect -the RPG from Bioware- is doing pretty well too with a sales number of 1,6 million.

"Microsoft is proud of the contributions Xbox 360 is making to the gaming industry, and looks forward to an even more successful 2008," said the company in a statement.
In comparison, the original Xbox was sold 24 million times in about five years. Very promising for the publishers is the fact that both the installed base of the console and the attach rate (the number of bought games per console) are starting to look good.

The number represents consoles sold to retailers. If retailres are using their current stock replace bricked systems the numbers don't represent a true install base.

I've seen retailers replace bricked xbox's with new consoles from their stock.

Even if this would be true, I don't think the amount of bricked systems is high enough for it to have any dramatic effect on the number.

And I'm pretty sure they ask MS a replacement for that bricked console, which eventually will be placed back in the retailer stock ...
