20 GB extra for a PS3 is not enough

Posted on Sunday, 15 July 2007 by Devilke, source: 1up
David Reeves, head of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, made clear that another 20GB (or the "new" model that will be released in the US) is not worth the trouble.

"You know, the difference between 60 and 80GB is very small," he said. "We just feel that going up 20GB is not worth it; if you're going to double it, it's worth it, so maybe you'll see something a little bit later, but 60 and 80 -- [there's] really not that much difference."

A PlayStation 3 with 120GB would be a lot more appealing, but it would still not justify a price raise of €100. These days, hard disks with 400 or 500 GB cost only one hundred euros!

Wait. So you're telling me that Sony made an official statement saying that they themselves overpriced the 80gb PS3 relative to the 60GB version, and are telling you not to buy it?

Someone needs to fire their whole marketing department, ha!

It seems that Sony US and Sony EU are in a PR battle... TO THE DEATH!

Basically Sony EU is trying to justify why they didn't follow through with the $100 price cut when Sony US did, then David Reeves (president of Sony EU) says that they only did the price cut to make way for an 80gb model and will discontinue the 60gb version. Sony US then fires back saying David Reeves is lying and that they plan to continue with the 60gb ps3. David Reeves comes back and says that the 80gb ps3 is stupid and theres no point in releasing a 20gb upgrade.

IMO I see David Reeves "resigning" after this ordeal. Running a smear campaign against another division of your own company isn't usually a good idea. He basicily doesn't want the EU territory to feel as if they got screwed over again so hes coming up with ways to put a negative spin on the US price cut.

Although I agree that the 80gb ps3 is obviously not worth the extra $100, who cares, you can still get the 60gb model for $499. But really at this point it doesn't even matter, with MGS going multi platform (and Konami making some pretty harsh statements about Sony/PS3) and the PS3 losing almost all of its exclusive titles. It almost doesn't matter how they package it or what it costs if its not going to have the software to back it up.
