They haven't figured out all the numberwork yet, but sales will rise beyond the £2 billion* of 2002 which was a record year. (*€2 860 000 000 or $3 650 000 000)
Christmas was a particularly strong selling period with a record 15 titles achieving platinum status (300,000 units) in the 10 weeks leading up to week 52 and Electronic Arts’ FIFA 2004 reaching double platinum status (600,000 units) in the same period.

Electronic Arts contributed substantially to the ongoing growth cycle, with 14 titles in the top 40 for the year, including five titles in the top 10. The top 40 product mix featured six sports titles, 10 titles based on film and TV franchises (including Harry Potter, Lord Of The Rings, The Matrix, Finding Nemo and The Simpsons), while FIFA 2004 was the overall winner.
Unfortunatly, the figure will include both software and hardware sales. I sincerely hope that a distinction will be made as it makes it easier to draw conclusions on both the hardware as software level.

But it's been a good year :)

I've read over at Gamesindustry.biz that console sales in the holiday period were down in comparison with the same period last year so it seems consoles aren't selling as well anymore and time for change is at hand.
Qua platforms, PS2 is still the number one in sales although being older and less "tech" than Gamecube and XBox.
In fact, the only console selling more than last year was Gamecube but that was to be expected as the price has dropped drastically.
I also believe this isn't doing any good to Microsoft as they had some very attractive package deals with their XBox but still can't seem to sell more than normal...

I don't get it, XBOX is a damn great console!! It's the best I ever had, apart from my NES, but that's mainly because of fond memories I suppose :).

the problem with XBox is the lack of killer titles. Fable has been postponed again and only Project Gotham Racing 2 was a big title in the Christmas sales period with about every other major XBox game being delayed until this year.
