3.5 million total WoW subscribers
Posted on Thursday, 21 July 2005 by Ryuken, source: Blizzard Entertainment
China is crazy about World of WarCraft. The mmorpg has launched there over a month ago and the subscription list already consists of more than 1.5 million subscribers.
Developer Blizzard Entertainment states that with these extra customers they have reached a magical number of 3.5 million subscribers. There were already 2 million subscribers in North-America, South-Korea and Europe combined, the regions where the games was first released.
As if this wasn't enough, Blizzard also plans a release of WoW in Taiwan and other parts of Asia. Pretty stunning numbers for a mmorpg PC game.

The Blizzard Entertainment®, Inc. today announced that World of Warcraft®, its subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), has surpassed 1.5 million paying customers in China - just a month following the game's commercial launch on June 7, 2005. The critically acclaimed World of Warcraft has now achieved another significant milestone as the largest MMORPG in the world, with more than 3.5 million global customers.
"World of Warcraft's success in China has quickly exceeded our expectations, and seeing Chinese gamers respond so enthusiastically to the game has been extremely gratifying," said Mike Morhaime, president and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We thank the players for embracing World of Warcraft, our partner The9 for helping to make all of this possible, and the Chinese authorities for their support of Blizzard Entertainment."
"Chinese gamers across the country have embraced World of Warcraft," said Michael Fong, Blizzard Entertainment managing director, Greater China, "and we are committed to responding with continual updates to the game, including new dungeons for players to explore, additional player-vs.-player content, ongoing live events, and much more. After playing EQ for nearly 4 years, DaOC for 18 months and now playing WoW for just over a year. I can say once you have completed the content as far as instances and end game bosses, the game is lacking content unless you enjoy PvP, which it has battlegrounds for this but the wait times can be annoying. I only played Eve Online for a month or so and while I was excited for a space MMO I honestly coudln't deal witht he endless mining. I'm sure there are things to do past this but I do know that WoW will hook you and and from the 3.5 million subscribers worldwide vs the 60,000 Eve Online, It hink the numbers tell the story.
To each his own, but WoW is a very well put together MMO, that has had nearly a patch per month or 6 weeks over the past 6 months. This includes New instances (area's to adventure) changes to character spells/talents to balance classes. Battle grounds "Alterac Valley" first came out, which is a large battle map with the end goal to take the opposing forces base and take out their general. 40 vs 40 players. Then a few months later added a CTF type of pvp map and a map that requires you to hold various flags, playing defense and having an organized gruop to win.
Before you bash the game you should play it, it's not the end all of MMO's but if you think Eve Online is the best MMO out there... I'm stunned. Please tell me what exactly keeps you and you 59,999 other ppl staying there to play? I'd love to hear a good review and somthing that peaked interest in this MMO (Eve).
