3D on current-gen consoles will be "limited"

Heavenly Sword dev doesn't see full 3D anytime soon
Speaking with CVG, Ninja Theory co-founder Tameem Antoniades said that the current generation of consoles isn't powerful enough to really have stereoscopic 3D games running on them.
"The problem is that to do 3D properly you need to render 60 frames per second, per eye. And at least a 720p resolution [per eye]," said Antoniades during a recent interview with CVG.

"So in essence that's 1080p rendering at 120 frames per second, and the current generation can only process very rudimentary graphics at that spec,"

"I think the technology's limited now, so you won't be able to play stuff that looks like Avatar - the movie - in 3D,"

"Every generation has to be at least five-to-ten times more powerful than the last, so I think we'll get there in the next generation. I think that will be totally revolutionary for games."
Last month, Sony Entertainment announced that this Summer a firmware update would provide the possibility of running stereoscopic 3D games if you have a 3D TV.

Seeing that only very few people have a 3D TV and new consoles aren't even planned yet, we shouldn't expect any stereoscopic 3D games to hit the stores for a few more years.

so the 3d demo of gran tourisimo and wipeout that sony showed at ces and the demo of avatar the game from ubisoft werent really in "proper" 3d then... when you consider that movies run at 24 frames per second then multiply that by 2 for 3d then its obvious that 120 frames per second isnt necessary for 3d to work. The mpeg standard for bluray films may require tvs that support 1080p at 120 fps but that doesnt mean that is the only way to do it when thats not what you get in the cinema or what you will get for 3d tv (maximum of 1080i) sometimes developers should think before making sweeping statements...
