40GB PS3 confirmed!
After weeks of rumours, speculations and half-confirmed statements it's finally official: there's going to be a new PS2 SKU, cheaper and with a 40GB harddisk instead of one with 60GB.
It will become available in Europe on October 10th without the possibility to play PS2 games. Also only 2 USB ports will be present instead of 4, and the slot for memory cards is also something you'll have to miss. The price on the other hand is good news: €399
Quite an attractive offer for those wanting to get Sony's latest console and already have a PS2 in the living room or don't mind not being able to play PS2 Games. Beware, no extra games or controller are present in the package.
If you've got some extra cash to spare, you can get the new Value Pack for €499 which will replace the Starter Pack (with the two extra games and two controllers)
The new Value Pack contains a 60GB PS2 with possibility to play PS2 games, 2 Sony games and one controller. The price drop is therefore a little bigger than the cost of the second controller that has been left out.
If you want a Blu-ray Disc player, I guess now is the time to get that PS3. If you want the console for games, it's up to you: wait until the real top games arrive, or buy it now already.
The new 40GB version will debut in the UK on October 10, and is "no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 titles," according to Sony. It will also only sport two USB slots instead of four, and will ditch the multi memory card port--although this can be added on with an accessory. The 40GB version will go on sale at a price point of £299 (about $610).

"As we approach our very first PlayStation Christmas, it is satisfying to be able to offer UK consumers the choice of two PlayStation 3 packages both now representing remarkable value," commented Ray Maguire, managing director of Sony Computer Entertainment UK.

No, just pointing out that €399 for a blu-ray player (in the form of the PS3) is a very good deal
