AMD goes 4x4

Posted on Friday, 2 June 2006 by Speed, source: Techreport
Techreport has word that AMD will be releasing a new platform that supports 2 Dual Core CPU's plus 2 graphic cards

As expected, AMD announced a new dual-socket desktop platform during its technology analyst meeting today. Dubbed 4x4, the platform will allow users to run two dual-core Socket AM2 Athlon 64 FX processors on a single motherboard. AMD says such a dual-socket system can then be fitted with two dual-GPU graphics cards, yielding a total of four CPU cores and four GPU cores—hence the 4x4 name.

The new platform will support standard DDR2 memory, unlike the Opteron dual cpu boards. Boards with the 4x4 platform are supposed to be shipping during the second half of this year.

My guess is that it's a first move from AMD to counter Intel's upcoming Conroe processor, but they'll have to make sure their prices come down to make it interesting to have 2 AMD cpu's instead of one Intel Conroe...

Well, if AMD drops their prices enough, it might be interesting to put two budget cpu's together, much like you would put 2x 6600GT in SLI?

Perhaps - AMD is in the process of changing from 200mm wafers to 300mm ditto + they're moving to 65nm processers and both moves should result in lowered production costs which again shows in the price of the processors so just maybe...but I still think it will mainly be hardcore benchers going for this platform, at least initially...
