Activision merging with Blizzard

Just when you thought Electronic Arts could buy out nearly every goddamn studio or publisher comes this news: Activision will merge with Blizzard Entertainment and the other studios of Vivendi Games.

The new name of the company will be Activision Blizzard and the deal is worth 18.8 billion dollars. Blizzard will be investing 2 billion dollars in the new group and Activision will sink 1 billion into it.

Since Blizzard is still owned by Vivendi, the latter company will become the biggest shareholder in the new group. The current CEO of Activision, Bobby Kotick, will be the chief executive for Activision Blizzard.

Blizzard is one of the most successful developers in the games business with the very popular WarCraft, Diablo and StarCraft franchises. Activision has also a lot of profitable IP's like Call of Duty, the Tony Hawk series and Guitar Hero.

Representatives from both firms say that their new company will be "the world's most profitable games business". I don't think they are wrong, be afraid EA.

Jean-Bernard Levy, Vivendi chief executive, said: "This alliance is a major strategic step for Vivendi and is another illustration of our drive to extend our presence in the entertainment sector.

"By combining Vivendi's games business with Activision, we are creating a worldwide leader in a high-growth industry."

It seems like the biggest games related news of 2007 has just popped up...

Update: Blizzard has put up a FAQ concerning the deal and the impact it will have on their working methods. In short: nothing really changes, only now Blizzard will have even more means to distribute and advertise their products.

The reason WoW doesn't need to be 100% innovative and unique is because many people havn't played alot of MMOs before, because they were usually turned off by them.

Read what you wrote well NINJAFISH. I rest my case. WOW IS MADE FOR MASSES. So were Spice Girls and Desperate Houswifes. You just admited it. MASSES = IGNORANT AND LAZY.

And I will turn the question on you: NAME ONE ORIGINAL TITLE BY BLIZZARD IN THE PATS YEARS. You claim there is one now step up and deliver before I start counting all the warcrafts, warcraft expansions, diablos...

OMG YOU MORON STOP TWISTING WHAT I SAID!

I did not 'twist' anything.

You say "not necessarily good, so in other words you are IMPLYING that WoW is bad. I did not make a statement, I asked a question, therefore my question still stands true.

So either, you read my post 'well' or shut the fuck up.

Just because something is made for the masses, does not make that thing good, bad, crap, 'for the lazy'. All games are made for the masses, the developers make games with the intenetion to sell their game to as many people as possible, millions of people by millions of different games, just because there is a bigger mass playing one game than another does not make that game "for the lazy and ignorant". Your post stinks of irony and contradictions, go drink yourself to death why I enjoy my new life completely unattached from "real life" in the world of warcraft.

And you just admitted to being an ignorant elitist snob who's opinion of games he's never played before is based on how popular the game is, the more popular the game, the more you hate it.

Wow you really have no idea what your talking about do you, from this statement alone I know that you have never actually played any of blizzard's games, except for that "45 minutes" of WoW which you claim to have played. And based on that 45 minutes you think you have formed a solid opinion of blizzard as a company.

Name one original title by blizzard? Wow thats easy, they are all original, and you seem to be suggesting that the games are all the same that Warcraft II is no different then Warcraft III or its expansions.

Let me show you how wrong you are.

Warcraft II released in 1996 (Game of the Year - PC Gamer)
Warcraft III released in 2002 (more then 6 game of the year awards)
Warcraft III: The frozen throne expansion 2003
World of Warcraft: Nov 2004 (also recieved multiple game of the year/MMO of the year awards.
That is a 6 year gap between those two games and the differences in game play, content, and graphics are huge.

Here is a screen shot comparison
WC II: www-users.mat.uni.torun.pl/~rembol/eng/wc2_1.jpg

WC III: img.gamespot.com/gamespot/images/2003/news/01/22/wc3/frozenthrone_screen003.jpg
World of Warcraft:

If you don't see the difference between these three games then you are bigger idiot then you've made yourself out to be.

Diablo released in 1996 (multiple game of the year awards)

Diablo II released in 2000 - 3+ game of the year awards along with record for best selling pc game (1 million in 2 weeks)

Oh yes these two games must be horrible, because they were both very popular, won many awards, and one is a sequal.

So how about you tell me again how they keep churning the same game out over and over again.

Oh yes and lets not forget starcraft (1998) which has over 5 game of the year awards and was given the award of "Greatest game of all time" by gamespot. It is also considered one of the most well balanced and built RTS of all time and even to this day a decade later has a huge following.

So next time you try to trash talk an organization or company you know absolutely nothing about, your better off keeping your mouth shut.

(yea it took me a while to respond, its exam week : / )
