Activision's plans for CoD future: new studio, new genres

Posted on Tuesday, 2 March 2010 by Speed, source: Kotaku
Activision - Blizzard has unveiled its plans for the Call of Duty franchise after tossing out two bosses at Infinity Ward.
Activision announced it will form a "dedicated [Call of Duty] business unit that will bring together its various new brand initiatives with focused, dedicated resources around the world." It plans to expand the Call of Duty brand "with the same focus seen in its Blizzard Entertainment business unit" placing a focus on "high-margin digital online content and further the brand as the leading action entertainment franchise in new geographies, new genres and with new digital business models."
Treyarch, makers of Call of Duty 3 and CoD: World at War will be releasing a new Call of Duty still this fall (rumoured to be Call of Duty: Vietnam) and next year will see another studio, Sledgehammer Games, formed by Dead Space vets Glen A. Schofield and Michael Condrey, take over Call of Duty from Infinity Ward. Indeed, it seems that Infinity Ward's bi-annual Call of Duty releases are done with.

Sledgehammer's Call of Duty is supposed to "extend the franchise into the action-adventure genre."

Infinity Ward then. They're still scheduled to release two map packs this year for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, but other than that there's no Call of Duty news about them at the moment.

Infinity Ward will temporarily be lead by Publishing's Steve Pearce, chief technology officer, and Steve Ackrich, head of production. Activision didn't want to comment further on the "HR matter".
