All Blizzard franchises to become MMOG?*

Posted on Wednesday, 14 June 2006 by Speed, source: F13
F13 is reporting that at a meeting to Wall Street, Vivendi made a huge announcement stating that all Blizzard franchises will become MMOG's.

All. They claim they have a model now to develop an MMOG in 3 years for $50 million. WoW cost 50 million euros and took 4 1/2 years.

So we can expect World of Diablo and World of Starcraft to be coming up soon. Don't really know how they intend to make sure the Blizzard fanbase doesn't get split up between their different MMOG's...

Still, an official announcement about this has yet to be made, so for now it's still only a rumour.

Update: there is already a not so surprising reaction from a Blizzard rep on the WoW-forums:
I believe this was a misquote. We haven't announced any specific development plans beyond the upcoming expansion for World of Warcraft, and we don't have any intentions to focus on only one genre or platform with our future games.

...

Nothing in that rumor is true in regards to Blizzard. If I had to guess, there was some confusion between what Vivendi has planned for its its game division versus what Blizzard has planned. While Blizzard is owned by Vivendi, their game division operates seperately from Blizzard.

So, it's not only MMOG's for the Blizzard franchises then. I think many fans will be delighted that this developer will probably still opt for true sequels instead of MMO-spin-offs.

wtf, the beginning of the end for Blizzard surely if it's true. I can't believe it actually, sounds a bit too much like a hoax.

I don't buy this. Gaming Steve knows a guy at Blizzard and he reports that they are working on both Diablo 3 and StarCraft 2, but that there are no plans for a "World of StarCraft." Blizzard has also said that they don't want to focus on multiple MMO projects at once as it will segment their audience. VU may own Blizzard, but they're never been able to exert and heavy creative control over them. I think this was some VU rep speaking about stuff he doesn't know about. With the massive success that StarCraft still is (and the sport it is in Asia), it wouldn't make sense for them to make it MMO only. This is also some blog post that provides zero details including even the name of the rep making the presentation. I guess we'll see what happens, but I really doubt Blizzard is going this way.

Wherever blizzard chooses to take their games, you can be damn sure they will be near perfect.

While I'm not aware of any perfect games out there, I do know blizzard usually maintains a certain quality in their games. IMO WoW is a good game, do I still play it? No, but I did for about 10 months. But just like any other good game you stop playing it.

Parallax, I agree WoW is not perfect, but in terms of sales and user base, it is the most succesful.

It is as close to perfect compared to other MMOs out today. I was more referring to the Crafts and Diablo but, WoW worked its wonders.

Far from perfect, it has many flaws. Doesn't matter if it's the "best" MMO out there, is still sucks in so many respects.
