Atari bribes for Driv3r ?

Posted on Monday, 28 June 2004 by Speed, source: Fragland
Spong may not be the utmost reliable source on the web, but the following concerning possible bribes from Atari to get better review scores for Driv3r did get my attention:
Ellis then moves on to claim that although the game may have been buggy upon release, the editorial team had no way of knowing this, as the review was written off the back of pre-release, non-final, code. “Because of the long lead times for magazines and the fact that it was an exclusive review, the code we reviewed from was not final. We were made aware of some bugs in the game and were promised that these would be sorted by the time of release. I cannot comment on whether these were fixed or not..." he states. As to whether magazines should be advising readers to buy products that cost £45 without ever seeing what those consumers will end up owning, is another matter entirely.
So, we've got several magazines that are giving the game an extremely high score, a game that's extremely buggy (I've heard the same from several editors of other sites that have already received a reviewcopy and we're astonished that the game ran so bad), Atari that sent out pre-release copies of the game which were all but final and last but not least a rumour that Atari has demanded 90% scores from magazines in order for them to receive review copies early.
Quite a lot of buzz for one game and I'm sure that although some things will probably be exaggurated, some shit is definitely going on with Atari (the game being buggy to start off with)

Neither I nor Spong are saying anyone got bribed. The thing is that there HAVE been rumors about Atari requesting high scores in exchange for reviewcode. On the other hand, we've got magazines giving very high scores based on previewcode with the "promise" of Atari that all present bugs would be fixed by the time it got retail.
What I am doing is saying that those magazines were NOT doing the right thing, they should have STATED they tested it on bugge previewcode and have come out from the beginning that the code was buggy but that Atari "promised" it would be fixed by release.
None of that was ever done until retail copies did arrive in stores while still being filled with bugs (and there WAS an embargo by Atari who didn't want ANYONE to post a review before the game hit store shelves - maybe they knew it was buggy and didn't want to miss the first wave of sales ?).

Anything that is given to another party to serve as a persuader or an influencer, is a bribe.

"Atari requesting high scores in exchange for review code" that's bribery.
