Atari founder predicts the end of piracy

Posted on Saturday, 24 May 2008 by Speed, source: Gamesindustry.biz
Nolan Bushnell is never too shy to give a good quote and this time he's stated that piracy will soon be a thing of the past thanks to a new encryption chip.

"There is a stealth encryption chip called a TPM that is going on the motherboards of most of the computers that are coming out now," he pointed out

"What that says is that in the games business we will be able to encrypt with an absolutely verifiable private key in the encryption world - which is uncrackable by people on the internet and by giving away passwords - which will allow for a huge market to develop in some of the areas where piracy has been a real problem."
The chip will not stop piracy of music and movies, but games will no longer be able to be copied due to the fact that games are "so integrated with the code. The TPM will, in fact, absolutely stop piracy of gameplay"

I guess we'll have to see about that.

I think you're asking too much now. A chip that prevents piracy means more money for companies. A chip that prevents viruses means less money for all the companies working on anti-virus software, firewalls, and overall security.

Think someone is going to integrate something that will destroy an entire sector in the IT business? Doubtful.

I predict the end of Atari soon. They suck so much since they're out of the console business.

Interesting, what if you don't have a TPM chip will you be unable to play the new games?

Uhm Speed, yes they will. If a chip can be found that eliminates all viruses, you can be damn sure they will actually integrate it, destroying the entire business. Motherboard producing companies have no interest in having a thriving anti-virus business, but the first virus-free computer will completely take over the entire industry, so of course they will grab their chance if they can.

It's only unfortunate that such a chip will never exist, it's just impossible.

Good point anon, but you sort of contradict yourself with saying a whole sector will be wiped out, and then stating that it can never be wiped out :P

And Bill Gates predicted that hard drives will not go over 500mb any time soon some years ago. Let me remind you of a famousy saying by a smart man "Life is what happens to you when you are making other plans". Stick to making games dude and don't play the oracle.

Piracy will never be stopped, aslong as there are people out there clever enough to come up with new ways to stop piracy there will still be people out there clever enough to come up with ways to get round it, nothing in this world is 100% uncrackable and secure and nothing ever will be.
