Atari sued over Dungeons & Dragons Online
Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast have filed suit against Atari for apparently breaching their licensing agreement for the Dungeons & Dragons brand. Not a lot of detail is given, but Atari going into bed with NamcoBandai seems to have struck a nerve:
Dungeons & Dragons is owned by Hasbro's wholly-owned subsidiary Wizards of the Coast, who discovered earlier this year that Atari may have entered into an unauthorized sublicensing relationship with Namco Bandai Partners (NBP) for the Dungeons & Dragons digital game rights. NBP is a competitor for both Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, and such an agreement is prohibited under the contract between Hasbro and Atari
Meanwhile, Atari has responded to the lawsuit:"Atari has had a long and rich history with the Dungeons and Dragons franchise, investing millions of dollars into numerous critically acclaimed and commercially successful games that have generated significant revenue for Hasbro. Hasbro has resorted to these meritless allegations, in an apparent attempt to unfairly take back rights granted to Atari. Atari has sought to resolve the matter without cooperation from Hasbro. We regret that our long-time partner has decided to pursue this action. Atari will respond appropriately through its legal counsel in court."
Always funny to see companies spin facts in their favor. Hasbro is saying they've been in talks with Atari for months to get the matter resolved and Atari is saying Hasbro just wants to get the rights back. I guess the truth will probably be somewhere in the middle. In other news:
