Aussies ban Left 4 Dead 2
Bad news for Electronic Arts and Valve Software as the Australian Classification Board has decided that Left 4 Dead 2 should not be sold down under.
This is what the Board themselves had to say regarding their refusal to give a rating:
According to its website, Valve's upcoming first-person shooter has been refused classification (RC) for failure to adhere to the current maximum MA 15+ ratings guideline for games. (Only films can reach the board's maximum R18+ rating.) The announcement means the Valve title is now illegal to sell, rent, or promote within Australia.
Left 4 Dead 2 now seems to join the ranks of Risen, Sexy Poker, and Necrovision who previously also were refused a rating. Sex Poker and Necrovision later on did get classification after some changes to the games were made. This is what the Board themselves had to say regarding their refusal to give a rating:
"the game contains realistic, frenetic and unrelenting violence which is inflicted upon 'the Infected' who are living humans infected with a rabies-like virus that causes them to act violently."
"However, it is the use of the 'melee' weapons such as the crowbar, axe, chainsaw and Samurai sword which inflict the most damage. These close in attacks cause copious amounts of blood spray and splatter, decapitations and limb dismemberment as well as locational damage where contact is made to the enemy which may reveal skeletal bits and gore."
If Valve decides to make certain changes to the gameplay, they can resubmit Left 4 Dead 2 for classification, which may result in it becoming available after all."However, it is the use of the 'melee' weapons such as the crowbar, axe, chainsaw and Samurai sword which inflict the most damage. these so called 'officials' can't get a thing right; they love to swing the proverbial banhammer around while allowing thousands of failed games, which sometimes don't even function properly, onto the market. if the game exceeds an MA 15+ rating, you are given two choices: either ban the game completely, thereby pissing off the crowd of expectant gamers and fans, or INVENT A NEW RATING! i know it seems outlandish, but it's possible that a new rating, such as R 18+, would serve just like the other ratings in informing potential buyers of the game's level of violent content. which of these two choices is the more reasonable? it seems to be an obvious answer to any of us, except for those who actually get to make the decisions.
