Today, normally at 16.00h GMT, the new 1.4 patch for Battlefield 2 would finally be available. We just checked and it isn't yet, but it probably won't take long anymore.

*Update*: it has arrived at last, grab the incremental version (1.3 to 1.4, 140 MB in size) right here!

This is the list of bug fixes and tweaks that the piece of software brings us:

GAMEPLAY TWEAKS

The vehicle drop has been modified to help prevent exploits such as blocking enemy vehicles, destroying vehicles and commander assets, or as an alternative to artillery.
C4 tossing distance has been reduced.
A prone->crouch delay has been added.

BUG FIXES

Fixed the Linux server hangs when trying to load a Special Forces Co-Op map.
Another attempt at fixing the Red/Blue nametag bug.
Fixed the missing server info on the map briefing screen.
Fixed the server browser issues with updating info.
Fixed the filter by maps size option in the server browser.
Fixed a low reproducibility crash bug related to the vehicle drop.
Fixed a crash in Co-op after a player is revived without a kit.
Fixed a server crash on Linux 32 when trying to rotate maps in Coop Mode.
Fixed the occasionnal red distance marker appearing on the ground.
Fixed the bug that caused the player's arms to become invisible when switching weapons.
Co-Op bot console commands now function on local servers.
Fixed the excessive damage taken by the Muscle Car.
Adjusted the minimum number of players to start the round on ranked servers. The new values for 16, 32 and 64 players are 6, 8 and 8 respectively.
Re-enabled unlocks on unranked servers.
Commander options are no longer available whilst commander is dead.
Fixed bug where a spawn point is shown as selected when it is not if player has spawned in during the preview round.
Co-Op (Local Server) - Fixed the issue where no other players may join the server if the server host is kicked and banned.
Ranked Servers now force unlocks.
Added support for multiple gamemodes in single maplist for mods

I bought this game in late 2005 and at least, with this patch installed, I can finally play on line - it never worked before (crash to desktop every time, latest drivers, no problems with any other application, reinstalls didn't help, etc - you know what I'm talking about).

But!
- It's slow. On a 3.2GHz P4/nvidia 6800GT/2GB fast RAM (latest drivers/no malware, AV, or non-essential services) it should run well. But no! Unless I want a slideshow I have to make it look like BF1942.

- I get VERY high pings on every server I can see from Switzerland (on CS:S I typically play on servers where I see a <35ms ping - sometimes as low as 9 - BF2 is never less than 60, and then only with empty servers - 90 is average.

Maybe the dedicated server is built to the same standard as the client!

There are plenty of minor annoyances, too, like:
- The server list scrolling is broken - you can't scroll one page at a time by clicking the scroll bar column, *and* the mouse wheel can't be used for scrolling at all
- Pressing escape does nothing useful for at least 10 seconds

And, believe it or not, you lose your key and joystick bindings when you install the 1.4 patch. Aargh! Making the game remember which joystick axis to use for what isn't hard. Why wasn't it done?

Another quality patch from EA for another 'quality' game. And by the way, these 'patches' aren't really patches at all - they're more like complete rebuilds...

This isn't meant to be a rant, but if HL2/CS:S can update itself, and run almost flawlessly, but BF2 can't, then what is EA doing selling the thing?

I won't be spending any more money with these people.
