Battlefield 2: Special Forces revealed

Posted on Thursday, 14 July 2005 by Ryuken, source: IGN
While making a terrible mess of the post-release support, EA doesn't feel ashamed to already reveal its plans for a first expansion to the popular online shooter Battlefield 2.

The addon is called Battlefield 2: Special Forces and it should come out this Fall. The chaps over at PC.IGN conducted an interview with Lead Designer Armando Marini, Producer David Yee, PR Representative Steve Groll and Matt Belanger.

IGNPC: You said there's more gear, so what kind of equipment are we talking about here?

Daivd Yee: The two big areas of equipment are night vision, which transcends to commander mode as well, and then the other section is mobility based features is a zipline, grappling hook.

There will clearly be a larger focus on infantry combat and thus somewhat smaller maps (but with more appropriate leveldesign to suit the man-to-man firefights). Flashbang, tear gas grenades are some of the new stuff you can throw with. Special Forces will include 7-8 new maps. Below you can read more specific info about the expansions content.

IGNPC: OK, how many new vehicles and such will be included then?

Yee: So the new bread and butter features for the expansion pack are six new armies, ten new vehicles, and twelve new base weapons.

...

IGNPC: What are the new armies included in the expansion?

Yee: Well, there's the Navy Seals, British SAS, Russian Spetznaz, MEC Special Forces and two insurgent groups, one of which is based on the MEC and one which will have Russian roots.

IGNPC: What's with the equipment for each? New stuff or repurposed stuff?

AJ: The insurgents will be based mostly around the Russian weapons since that's more accurate. The Americans we're adding a new FNScar which is the new special forces assault rifle. And the SAS have a full compliment of weapons too.

Frankly, it doesn't sound bad at all but the problems of the original version aren't solved yet which takes the enthusiasm away.

Sounds like a great expansion, because I really love maps like strike at karkand, mashtuur city, and sharqi peninsula in BF2. I hope that DICE will fix the remaining problems, without anymore recalls of patches because of EA's test department being retarded, though.

BF2 rocks, and I have no problems running it in 1600x1200, high detail ... maybe that's because I have nothing less than Class A components?

the expansion sounds nice, but they should better fix the bugs first and then work on an expansion.

LOL D*Reeves, then who's responsible for the development you think ?
Afaik it's Dice developing the server daemon, and it would be EA publishing... so... it's all their fault. period.

I blame windows, or more importantly microsoft as most of the games are running under an windows os.
I bet old bill is having a great big laugh when he see's Ea and Dice getting the blame!

Well, you gotta look at what OS' are meant to do. Windows was built for the desktop ground up, and has evolved in that direction ever since. Linux evolved from a concept of Unix, and was made for the developer and server market.

All Windows does is offer APIs to programmers like DICE, so that they can program their own games, apps, whatever. It's DICE's fault for making a programming error and thus including a memory leak in the patch. On the other hand, people might say that it was EA who in fact let this error slip past their QA lab and released the patch instead of returning it to DICE and asking for another RC from them.

Either way if you blame DICE or EA, you are right in your own respect.

From the previews of this expansion pack it looks like the spec to play it on high graphics are gonna be a lot higher. Does anyone know if the expansion pack will be about the same stress on your computer or more?
