Bizarre Creations: People don't care about Leaderboards
Sometimes people say stuff that makes you wonder whether they've got any idea what they're talking about. Meet Bizarre Creations' Gareth Wilson, lead designer of BLUR, who clearly believes leaderboards are definitely not something people care much about.
Hell, even in the old days when PC shooters like Quake and Half-Life ruled the scene we already had laddersites like Clanbase where just about every online gamer would try to compete. Maybe not for being the best in the world but certainly to get as high as possible nonetheless.
I think the whole leaderboard thing is a bit of a red herring. I don't think the majority of people really care that much about being number one in the world. Don't get me wrong, we're still going to have leaderboards of who's the best on certain tracks... But PGR3 was a good example of this, you could download the world's best ghost, and you could race against it and at the first corner, it's gone. Mere mortals such as me couldn't keep up with that sort of thing.
I agree that being number one in the world may not be on the top of most people's mind, but I doubt online console gaming would have been so successful if it hadn't been for leaderboards. Hell, even in the old days when PC shooters like Quake and Half-Life ruled the scene we already had laddersites like Clanbase where just about every online gamer would try to compete. Maybe not for being the best in the world but certainly to get as high as possible nonetheless.

Some games are good with them, some games are pointless. You cannot summarise all game leaderboards
