Blizzard financials: WoW subscriptions and quarterly earnings down

Posted on Thursday, 10 November 2011 by Speed, source: VG247
Activision - Blizzard's latest earnings call revealed that Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft has lost again no less than 800000 subscriptions.

Blizzard boss Mike Morhaime stated that most of the subscriptions were lost in "the East" while WoW does remain extremely popular in China and the most popular subscription-based MMO in the world.

Morhaime also stated that due to the hardcore focus of Cataclysm, and the lack of features for casual gamers, the drop of new subscriptions for the MMO was faster than expected. Blizzard expects the upcoming expansion, World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, to cater more to the casual gamers with the pet battle system, while hardcore gamers will still find their thing with a new focus on PvP and the Horde vs Alliance storyline.

All in all Blizzard's quarterly earnings were down year on year in the last quarter, but Morhaime blamed the fact that the company hasn't launched any titles this year.

You made a mistake. It should be they have lost another 800.000 subscriptions, leaving them with no less than 10.3 million subscriptions, which is around 2.2 million canceled subscriptions since the launch of Cataclysm.

I also think they have the wrong reason why they are losing all those subs, they were told what was wrong with Cataclysm when it was launched and their reply to that was, it's the way we wont it to play, so we are not changing it. As far as I remember it had nothing to do with casual or hardcore gamers it was just the game itself that was wrong, so they are just going to get it wrong even more with Pandaria, or as it's being called KungFu panda. They really need to start listening to their customers and not Bobby
