BluRay regions announced
Posted on Wednesday, 28 December 2005 by Nanaki, source: GamersReports
Masakazu Honda from ITMedia has reported about the latest version of the "AACS contents management system for HD formats". Basically, what the region coding of BluRay and HDDVD will be. Considering the PlayStation 3 will use BluRay, it might get a lot easier for Americans to import Japanese titles:
However, it's very likely for the PS3 to follow the same road as the PSP: no regions at all. Let's hope so.
Region 1: North America, South America, East Asia except for China (India, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia etc.)
Region 2: Europe and Africa
Region 3: China, Russia and other countries

And best of all, Region coding actually creates piracy, because...
No. 1: Many people will buy foreign players anyways, and people may have a chance to get it sooner or at a cheaper price anyways.
No. 2: It will create work for the pirates, and once cracked, pirates will benefit while it leaves consumers in the cold.
No. 3: Not related to piracy, but region coding is actually illegal by world laws, because it's a violation of free trade laws.
As far as copyrighted works, I think it should be OK to make permanent copies of DVDs you have lawfully purchased for personal use as long as you keep the origional and the copies. I do think that you should watch it on any DVD player you own and anywhere you want, whether I am in Africa, Asia, or South America. But one's thing clear. Mass copying and selling, giving a DVD to your friend to copy, making 20 burns for your friends or at members of a bash party is not cool.
