CCP hires economic expert

That CCP takes their MMORPG EVE Online quite seriously we know now for a while, but that they would hire a financial expert to keep an eye out on their ingame economy is still quite extreme. This person called Dr. Eyjólfur Guðmundsson will publish quarterly reports about the economic situation and other indicators, such as inflation and economic growth.

Reykjavik, Iceland – June 27, 2007 – CCP Games, one of the world’s largest independent game developers, today announced the appointment of a in-world lead economist for EVE Online. This is the first time an MMOG has commissioned a dedicated real world economist to operate at this level of economic monitoring and research for a virtual world. The appointment is a real testament to the growing intricacy and strength of EVE Online’s thriving virtual economy.

Could somebody please tell the developers it's still a GAME and not reality?

Personally I approve of this. this has been suggested for several years now on the forums. Things like seeding Tech II on the open market, etc. are all good moves that would likely be suggested by the economist. Damn, I only wish I already had my BSc in Economics so that I could take the job :P

Its not a bad idea, especially considering that the whole market is nearly purely player driven.

This is not about wether or not it's a game or not, this is also about wether or not you can apply economical models to a game like this. And if you can, this could also be a good testing ground for new economical theories/models.
