Carmack speech highlights at QuakeCon
Posted on Saturday, 5 August 2006 by Ryuken, source: Firingsquad
John Carmack talked about a number of interesting subjects at QuakeCon 2006.
Both AMDZone and PlanetQuake4.net have collected all the info they could make out of the two hour long speech. Here are the excerpts from PlanetQuake4:
AMDZone further states that coop might be in the new, unrevealed id title. And that megatexture will be applied to indoor levels also (which isn't the case with Quake Wars).
Quite notable are Carmack's thoughts on physics cards:
And Cell gets another stab from him:
Both AMDZone and PlanetQuake4.net have collected all the info they could make out of the two hour long speech. Here are the excerpts from PlanetQuake4:
On the next original id title:
* id Software will be focusing on gameplay over graphics in their next unannounced title.
* id's next title will be a 3D action title that will be their biggest diversion since Wolfenstein.
* A more advanced version of the megatexture technology will be used in id's next title which includes lots of outdoor areas.
* While they will be developing their next game simultaneously on the XBOX 360, their primary development platform is still the PC.
* Their current project will include multi-processor support in both the console and PC platforms.
* id is branching out in a different direction for their new title which they expect to be a blockbuster.
* id's next game has "a lot of people in it".
* id wants to stick with games that people inside the company are used to developing.
On his cell phone game thing:
* Discussed the fun his cell phone game development has been.
* Has thought about porting cell phone games over to the Nintendo DS.
On Quake 3:
* Security was on the minds of id during the development of Quake3.
* The recently patched Quake3 bugs were let into the game code in a later patch, not the original game code.
* Discussed the problems of releasing a game's source code while the game is still popular like they did with Quake3. Carmack polled the audience and asked if they thought he released Quake3's source code too early. Only a few raised their hands.
On modding:
* The current mod community is slacking because of the work it takes to make mods with such advanced games.
On his rocket-project:
* NVIDIA is sponsoring Carmack's Armadillo Aerospace corporation's rocket in the latest X-Prize completion.

Quite notable are Carmack's thoughts on physics cards:
id has no plans currently to implement physics card support. Carmack feels it will mostly be used for graphical gimmicks, and id has their own in house physics engine that they can use for whatever project they want. They feel physics cards could cause more problems in dev than they are worth, and that they will not change game play. With purely a graphics eye candy aspect they are not currently interested in the technology.
And Cell gets another stab from him:
Carmack believes Cell is somewhat over hyped. It would not make a fast workstation CPU. He also believes that currently the cell power is 70% or more unused. He does believe Sony dodged a bullet by not using cell for the graphics.
