China to make healthy videogames

Posted on Friday, 22 October 2004 by Speed, source: Fragland
TimesOnline has word that China finds Western videogames not to be so great for the children and has decided to make better videogames themselves
SEX and gore are banned, replaced with ancient myths whose benevolent heroes will help to wean teenagers off their favourite violent computer games.
That, at least, is the wish of the Chinese Government, which has earmarked more than £150 million to nurture an indigenous programming community to produce home-grown electronic entertainment.

An initial batch of 100 games has been commissioned concentrating on Chinese literary classics, national myths and stories of Chinese adventurers. As well as promoting domestic industry, the programme will, it is hoped, foster a sense of patriotism among the young and help their education.

Nearly 50 companies have joined the four-year programme, attracted by tax breaks and cheap loans, according to Yu Yongzhan, deputy director of the Press and Publication Administration.

The drive comes after the announcement last month of a government initiative to support the “healthy” use of online facilities, a programme welcomed by many parents.

This is a pretty good idea, if they make quality games for kids to play. Sadly, most "kids games" are very shoddy, cheaply built and not much fun. I believe that games do not have to be bloody and violent in order to be good. Adults should be able to buy and play whatever games they want however. I still believe that it is up to the parents to decide and monitor what games their kids play, not the government.

I never would have thought it, China not liking something so they make their own censored version.

/end sarcasm

Actually it may not be a bad idea, I dont think alot of the games out today are appropriate for gamers under 10. Btw is it just me or has the censorship of video games in general on the rise.

im 14, and i know many people around the age of 9 and 8 in my school, all of which play games like ut2004, their parents really dont care and so i think that is a good initiative because as it seems that parents really cant be bothered to even look at what their kids spend pocket money on
