Cryptic Studios working on Star Trek Online
Posted on Monday, 28 July 2008 by L0k1-, source: Startrekonline
For a long time it seemed uncertain if a Star Trek mmorpg would ever see the daylight after Perputal Entertainment went bankrupt. Luckily Cryptic Studios saw potential in the franchise and today they officialy announced that they'll be working on Star Trek Online.
You will be able to play as a Klingon or Federation captain and discover new planets and starsystems in name of your faction. Of course you can't control your ship all by yourself, so you'll be able to recruit several NPC's for specific functions on your ship, like a medical or engineering officer.
Besides fighting in space, you will also be able to fight on the surface of different planets with your 'away-team'. This will all be shown in some pretty nice graphics as you can see on the screenshots.
What's also surprising is that the game is not only in development for PC, but also for console. But it seems that the PC version has the highest priority for the moment.
More information will only be available from August 10. Then the developers will attend a Star Trek convention in Las Vegas and show a trailer with ingame footage. They will also release a webcast of it so that we can follow the event live through our PC.
When the opportunity came for Cryptic to obtain the license for Star Trek, we were absolutely thrilled. I realized how many people at Cryptic loved the IP when the possibility of us getting the rights leaked out to the rest of the company. I had more Trekkies in my office asking to work on the project than I ever imagined.
