DICE drops Xbox/PS2 versions of secret project
In October of last year, DICE and Electronic Arts reported that they reached an agreement about a new, secret title for Xbox, PS2, Xbox 360, PS3 and the PSP.
Now, a couple of months later the same companies announce that the game is pulled from development for the 'current gen' platforms; the Xbox and PS2. The main reasons are the overall disappointing sales figures of games for those 'old' platforms since people start to prepare and save money for the new consoles.
Battlefield 2: Modern Combat for Xbox and PS2 did sell already about one million copies but because of the high budget both DICE has spent on the game's production, they should sell at least four million copies to see any royalties from EA. DICE did receive funds for the development already so they remain just break-even.
Regarding the other versions of the secret project: Electronic Arts UK is now responsible for the PSP version and Digital Illusions are creating the game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. All versions of this unknown game will be available in 2007.
On a sidenote: the expansion to Battlefield 2 for PC, Battlefield 2: Special Forces, has been sold only 50.000 times on the internet through EA Downloader.
