DICE explains: a beta is not a final product nor demo

Posted on Saturday, 8 October 2011 by Speed, source: The Guardian
It appears some people don't quite understand the concept of a beta.

Some gamers have been giving relatively negative feedback on the beta test that offered one map and one mode. They also reported there were quite a lot of bugs and gameplay issues.

DICE's Patrick Liu has now clarified that the beta was meant to test the backend of the system and that way make sure no server or load problems would arrive when the game hits the market.
Our primary intentions have been to test the backend.

As we said at the beginning, we have six times the number of players we had with Bad Company 2, we have record high concurrent users compared to anything we've done before. And we know it works. In previous games, like Bad Company and 1943, we've had serious problems with the backend, it's just been overloaded - this time it hasn't been a problem.
For them the test was very positive, especially when compared with Bad Company. They also wanted to avoid having issues like with BF1942 which was ten times as popular than initially thought, resulting in quite a lot of downtime due to overload.

On the criticism that only one map was available and this even without vehicles, the man had the following to say:
We ran the alpha tests with a rush map and we wanted to have some sort of reference so we could compare results - so we needed to have more-or-less the same map.

But we do understand the concerns that we didn't show a conquest map, but we have demoed Caspian Border, and we did run a conquest map as a limited PC-only test.
The decision was taken to compare with the alpha-tests which were also in Rush mode.

So conclusion: a beta and a demo are not the same!
