DICE: games are turning into a service

In a new interview, Battlefield 3 producer Patrick Bach stated that games are turning more and more into a service rather than a product.
“I also believe that our free social platform Battlelog will make a huge difference in how people perceive where the game starts and ends. Games, especially FPS titles with their deep persistence and team play are no longer just hard-coded discs. They are transforming into a service.”
He also noted that the market for FPS games can easily hold more than one big game (referring to Call of Duty vs Battlefield):
“I think this year will see a huge growth in the total FPS market,”

“The market can grow and include several titles as long as they complement each other and add quality and value to the players.”
Publishers are indeed trying to market games more and more as a service rather than a product. However, I'm totally not convinced this is a positive trend for consumers. Lots of stuff that used to be for free, or open for the public, is currently getting closed off or becomes payable. Where's the benefit for the customer? Achievements and Trophies? If one had asked a consumer five years ago if they were willing to pay for that, I bet they would have clearly asked whether you were insane. And yet, millions of people are doing it at this moment. Again shows the general public doesn't always know what is best...

Now there's the biggest problem with games now, they are no longer games anymore. They are needing to take a step back and look at what they are doing, start making games again and maybe, just maybe fewer company's will go bust.
