Japanese cinema is gaining influence in the US the last couple of years and in such a way even that Hollywood is doing remakes of tons of recently released Japanese movies. The remakes are made to put everything in an American environment so that the viewer (the average American Joe Schmuck) would understand what's going on.

That this may work for some movies is proven by The Ring and The Grudge. However, it isn't always a good idea and Dark Water is evidence of that.
