Demos don't sell games, trailers do
A new study has revealed that although trailers do manage to increase game sales, demos don't. This is according to a study performed by the Electronic Entertainment Design and Research Group (EEDAR), the guys that also came up with the idea that marketing departments should team up with the developers to come up with Achievements for the Xbox360.
Though demos have become commonplace a few weeks ahead of a game’s release, the EEDAR found that trailers are more effective than hands-on time with the product. Short and Zatkin actually recommended publishers start producing demos only after release to avoid interference with the final weeks of polish.
Personally I'm not surprised of this outcome. With a trailer, a publisher can completely tweak what the gamer will experience while with a demo the player can really experience the game. And if that game sucks, he'll know. Unlike when he watches a trailer...In other news:
