Details about New Super Mario Bros. for the DS
The Big N was rather quiet about the newest Super Mario Bros for the Nintendo DS but thanks to the guys of the Famitsu magazine we now know a little bit more.
There'll be a two player mode. Thanks to the WiFi option and the addition of two screens, players aren't limited to one screen anymore. Therefore they can go wherever they want. The game mode will however be more competetive rather than co-op.
A multiplayer mode for up to four players will also be implemented. This will consist mostly of several mini-games. Aside from a bunch of new games, Nintendo is also planning to throw in some good ol' Mario 64 mini-games. These will obviously be modified to make full use of the DS technology.
The 3D world will feature all the usual enemies and friends, but the game will mainly be a side-scroller. A nice addition will be the possibility to blow yourself up to enormous sizes (see screenshot) and schrink again to be able to crouch through narrow spaces.

While New Super Mario Bros. uses 3D graphics, it's fundamentally a side-scrolling game. And as such, the developer is throwing in plenty of nostalgia-driven references to the original game. In addition to hidden blocks that hide 1UP mushrooms and stage-ending flagpoles, gamers can expect to run into 3D versions of familiar foes, like goombas, piranha plants, and cheep cheeps.
