E3: Miyamoto speaks

After the doors at E3 closed last night, Nintendo held a general press presentation which is not really a conference but more like a 'sit down, shut up and pay attention' kind of thing. Nobody was complaining though as it was the great Shigeru Miyamoto who got some creative play and speak time and he added some interesting info to the E3 presentation.
  • Mario: Mario Galaxy was the first time he got to work with spherical worlds and he was quite disappointed he couldn't fit in all of his idea's. He had so much left that for the first time ever Nintendo made two 3d Mario's on the same platform. They wanted to make Mario Galaxy 1.5 first but got carried away and made a game which is 99% new.
  • Zelda: The DS version which debuted at GDC this year will bring more of the same to star with and then has a turn of gameplay to move the franchise forward. The next Wii version will hopefully be presented at E3 2010.
  • Competition: He wasn't all that impressed with the new control methods from both Microsoft and SONY as 'they were not new' and he feels Nintendo does a better job of innovating and perfecting. He also pointed out that the Vitality Sensor is very unique and might shape the control interface of the future.
  • Hardware: They have been faced with hardware limitation ever since they developed for the 8-bit systems and this is an interesting challenge. Once Nintendo's devs feel they have reached the platform limit, they will start thinking about moving on. He did say that they will make it iterative and will be moving the hardware in small steps 'Each successive hardware, a little more powerful'.
  • If you ask me (but who is really?) Nintendo's line-up was very iterative this year with a lot of sequels and 'Plus' versions and when he said that they are planning the same thing with the Wii hardware this makes me afraid that they will go the same way with the Wii as they went with the DS. It will bring them loads of cash no doubt but will the customers be as forgiving for this when they start doing it with €240+ hardware instead of a console that costs more than 100 Euro's less?
