EA CEO: Wii can get PS2 userbase if it gets price drop
Posted on Thursday, 10 December 2009 by Speed, source: Gamesindustry.biz
One can almost start wondering whether EA's CEO, John Riccitiello, ever shuts up...
At the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference on Wednesday, Riccitiello aired his belief that if Nintendo would drop the price of their Wii console, they could easily inherit the entire market that's currently still active on PS2:
At the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference on Wednesday, Riccitiello aired his belief that if Nintendo would drop the price of their Wii console, they could easily inherit the entire market that's currently still active on PS2:
"If you look at the research at what consumers are spending their time doing, the PS2 is still right up there in terms of time usage. There is a huge number of people still playing the PS2,"
"My belief is the first platform that gets to $149 is going to inherit much of that business. And the Wii's best opportunity – they've got the lowest cost platform out there – if they drive price I think they can really do well."
With over 138 millions units sold and a still very active userbase (the PS2 was recently launched as a new product in Brazil f.i.) there's plenty of potential present. Riccitiello continued by saying that without any innovation or a price drop, the Wii would face some extremely hard times next year with Sony's motion control and Microsoft's Natal coming up:"My belief is the first platform that gets to $149 is going to inherit much of that business. And the Wii's best opportunity – they've got the lowest cost platform out there – if they drive price I think they can really do well."
"$199 up against an Xbox 360 is a tougher compare especially in a world when Natal comes."
"There's a winning hand for all three of them and we'll see who gets aggressive enough first. The Wii is not gone. But if they maintain $199 and don't innovate they're going to have a hard time competing with what's already been announced from Microsoft and Sony."
Without a significant price difference between the Wii and the X360, Nintendo is facing problems already if you ask me. After all, how many party games does one want to have? And it's not like the Wii lineup can compete with that of the PS3 or X360 at the moment..."There's a winning hand for all three of them and we'll see who gets aggressive enough first. The Wii is not gone. But if they maintain $199 and don't innovate they're going to have a hard time competing with what's already been announced from Microsoft and Sony."
