EA: Consoles don't dominate gaming industry anymore
Posted on Wednesday, 20 July 2011 by Speed, source: IndustryGamers
EA CEO John Riccitiello has made the bold claim that consoles are no longer the dominant factor in the gaming industry.
He said this following statements that this generation of consoles is going on longer already than we're all used to, and Nintendo not being in line anymore with the competition by only new technically getting on the level of the PS3 and X360 with the upcoming release of the Wii U.
Back in 2000, nobody included cell phones as part of the "gaming industry" (although they too already had games on them - I spent hours playing Snake!), now did they? And where does he come up with that 80%? Has he forgotten that back in 2000, PC was a HUUUUGE gaming platform? And what about flash webgames? There were tons of those back in 2000 as well!

"I would argue that one of the least interesting things about the games industry was that every 5 years you’d see a new console or platform from everybody at about the same time with about the same or similar upgrades or services. You’d sort of harvest it and then it’d cycle back. We got used to it. It’s what seemed normal. But it’s not a particularly smart way to run an industry... bulges in technology investment followed by harvest. And let’s be realistic. Consoles used to be 80% of the industry as recently as 2000. Consoles today are 40% of the game industry, so what do we really have?"
"We have a new hardware platform and we’re putting out software every 90 days. Our fastest growing platform is the iPad right now and that didn’t exist 18 months ago. So the idea that we’re categorizing the industry as being [cyclical]... Nintendo is off cycle with what? I mean, the point of reference is gone."
Of course the point of reference is gone! If you change the parameters, your data will change, that's basic math! "We have a new hardware platform and we’re putting out software every 90 days.
