EA: Gears of War has zero innovation

Posted on Friday, 10 November 2006 by Speed, source: Eurogamer
According to Alain Tascan, general manager for EA Montreal, Gears of War has zero innovation

"I'm not talking about my tastes, I'm just saying, when you go to metacritic and you see a 96 for Gears of War, then you read the critics saying, 'Okay, storyline - there's none, gameplay is not innovative...' Then I say, why did they give this 96? They were blown away by the high quality of the graphics... Myself, I prefer something more creative,"

Honestly, I find this extremely funny coming from an executive of the company that constantly rehashes the same games over and over with little innovation but mostly graphical updates (EA Sports series anyone?)

Hmm still, it's interesting to hear them actually comment on a game by their competitor. I don't think I have heard this happening before.

It looks like the EA execs are buying into their own propaganda so much that they don't notice the crap they are producing. All their sports-titles which offer little to no improvements each year they release them comes to my mind, in addition to other series where we are seeing the same trend: Battlefield, Need For Speed, and so on.

It's a common thing... graphics are coverups for storylines nowadays. Been a while since I played a game where I felt immersed through storyline rather than through graphics :|

After just releasing the shocking i wouldnt use it as a coaster NFS carbon, i would of thought Electronic Arseholes would have gone into hiding.

Instead they come out slagging of whats probably gona be dubbed the game of the year.

I HATE EA AND THEY SHOULD BE BANNED FROM THIS PLANET.

I think its worth noting that Mr. Tascan had not even played the game before making that comment, so the rest of his credibility (assuming he had any left, being from EA) just went down the drain.

Gears of War is a fantastic game, and I think the cover system was done extremely well. It's the first shooter to have implemented cover in a way that's so much fun, and thats enough innovation for me. Forget the gorgeous graphics, online co-op/competitive play, and of course the freaking chainsaw. I haven't gotten tired of the chainsaw yet, either.

And besides, who cares if GoW is innovative or not? It's extremely fun, and that's really all that matters.

Gears of War is an amazing game and just looks jaw dropping.

Anyone who says otherwise is just gay.

What about this quote:
Sony Computer Entertainment's President, Kaz Hirai, has stated that, "the next generation doesn't start until we say it does."

Apparently, Kaz doesn't check out the competition. Otherwise, he would have seen Microsoft's Gears of War, the gritty, bullet-riddled bloodbath that eats PS3 games for lunch. This over the top, incredibly violent, and undeniably slick looking videogame is the epitome of a summer blockbuster. It's loud, full of action, and was extremely expensive to make. The only difference is, whereas movies force people to be observers, Gears grabs them by their arms and forcibly drags them into an interactive war zone that's so terrifying it makes the conflicts in Sony's Resistance: Fall of Man seem like basic training.
