EA: Microtransactions are the future!
Speaking at the Edingburgh Interactive Festival, Peter Moore stated that the future is free-to-play online games, funded by microtransactions.
Look at it this way: you pay for a basic game and everything that makes it more "fun" needs to be paid for. To be honest, I prefer paying 60 euros to get a full experience instead of paying nothing to get a half-finished product and then having to pay small amounts of money for small things until I finally reach what I initially wanted and in the end spent more than 60 euros.
And who will want to spend money on a basic game in the first place?
While traditional game retail will be part of EA's business for a "very, very long time," free-to-play online games are "the future of where our key franchises are going," he said. Paid subscription models will be key, but microtransactions will be the company's main way of making a success of these franchises, he said. Moore gave the example of a Tiger Woods game that's initially free to play, but in which 50 cents will get players a better golf club, or a $5-a-month subscription will unlock new courses on a regular basis.
To be honest, I find the whole "microtransactions" business model being a downer for all creativity. Of course if you are already paying for a game.... then it's an insult to the gamer to start asking money for small things, things that were in the past free of charge.

I like it, I'd be able to play some of the good ones then. Micro transactions > Pay monthly.
sadly it has always been proven that micro payments cannot give the same quality as a subscription based MMO.
Take for example Runes of Magic, currently the best F2P mmo with micropayments... it can't even come near World of Warcraft, which itself isn't really that advanced if you look at its features :)
